Final Fight (SNES) Review – I Hope It’s The Last

Mayor Mike Haggar has a problem. His daughter was kidnapped by the Mad Gear gang that is terrorizing Metro City. Like most mayors he’s taking the law in his own hand with her boyfriend Cody.

Capcom released Final Fight in arcades in 1989. It was popular because of the coop play. It was ported to the Super Nintendo and it is not as great as the arcade version.First off, in the arcade edition, there are three protagonists that you can choose to fight the Mad Gear. This game is missing Guy probably due to space limitations. The Industrial Zone is missing from this version including the boss Rolent. To top that off, there is no coop play. This game isn’t that fun to play alone. Poison and Ivy were taken out of the game and replaced by Billy and Sid because Nintendo didn’t want the user to beat up women. Also, Damnd and Sodom had their names changed to Thrasher and Katana.

The good news is that the sprites are highly detailed and look like their arcade counterparts. There is a variety of enemies to fight though a few of them are palette swaps like the Andores. The stages feature graffiti and other little details to remind you that you are in the Slums or the Subway. Unfortunately, because of the large sprites, there are slowdowns when there are four enemies on the screen. In some cases if there is anything breakable on the screen, there will only be three enemies on the screen because of the slow down.

The music is arcade accurate. There are about six different themes that used throughout the game. The larger characters stomp across the stage, warning you of their arrival.

The controls can be bad when there are a lot of enemies on the screen because of the slowdown. You are given a jump button, an attack button, and if you press both of them, a special attack. With the attack button, you can do combos, throws, and pick up weapons such as knives, pipes, and katanas. Cody moves faster than Hagger but Haggar hits harder.

I rate this 1 out of 5 because if you have an Xbox 360 or PS3, you can get the arcade port cheaper than this used. Graphically it holds up well but it is slow and its missing features like coop play. I also hate that they limit the number of lives and continues that you get. I paid for the game and I should be able to play forever.
