In the next Mass Effect title- whether or not it’s actually called “Mass Effect 4″- Sheppard will not be the main character. In fact, it seems Bioware is going in a much different direction.
When approached by vg247, Fabrice Condominas of Bioware Montreal explained that the series will be continuing after Mass Effect 3. News that is sure to bring many fans joy but it’s worth considering what else he said.
“So first, we don’t want to make ‘Shepard 2′, or Mass Effect 4 with like, ‘oh there’s no more Shepard but you’re a soldier in the universe’. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest.”
So what we can gather from this is that not just the character will change but so will the setting, story and gameplay as well, which is certainly interesting. The Mass Effect universe is certainly huge and has a rich lore so it’d be quite intriguing just to see what Bioware do with it. Only time will tell, there hasn’t been a lot of other info leaked about the game just yet so it’s hard to make assumptions.
Still I think this is a great opportunity for Bioware to spread their wings a little. Right now they just seem to hold the place of EA’s RPG factory.
