Magic 2014 Expansion Review:Demons, Elves & Samuari

Wizards of the Coast recently released a new expansion for Magic 2014 that introduced five new decks, five new challenges and a new campaign in which our intrepid planewalker embarks on a new quest to obtain the items needed to cast a spell that will make her immortal, or at least slow the aging process to a crawl.

021315Within the game itself this equates to giving you five new chapters full of AI opponents to fight against as our protagonist returns to the realms of Ravnica and Alara as well as new addition; Kamigawa, the land of the samurai.

After beating the boss of each chapter, just like within the main campaign, you’ll unlock one of five great new decks with cards from the plane you are currently visiting.

There’s a white/Green/Blue Bant deck – Hall of Champions, a mono/green elf  deck – Sylvan Might, a white/red Kamigawa deck – Sword of the Samurai, a mono/ black demon deck – Lords of Darkness and Dodge and Burn: a Ravnica themed, blue/red ‘counterburn’ deck.

In all there are a total of 280 additional cards to unlock, but oddly the  expansion doesn’t add any additional sealed play options, as someone who prefers to try to construct my own decks this is a bit of a shame. But you can still use all the decks and cards you do unlock within the main game as well, so it isn’t the end of the world.

2013-09-24_00003Aside from the new mini campaign there are also five new challenges to complete, to be honest I didn’t get very far with these as I am not the greatest Magic player and they are pretty fiendish. But if you fancy a challenge or want to put your Magic skills to the test, they more than live up to their name.

So, should you bother with this expansion? If you prefer sealed play or are happy with the existing selection of decks from the main game and don’t care much for the games offline elements, there really is no need to purchase the add-on. You can simply download the compatibility update and continue to play against the whole of the community, regardless of whether they opted to get the new decks or not.

However, if you enjoyed the games original single player campaign and challenges and want more to sink your teeth into, at only £3.99  I would certainly recommend giving the Magic 2014 expansion a whirl.
