Sorry everyone, I know, I was as giddy as you were when I read that a trademark for Shenmue 3 had been filed with European Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market. The problem is that it doesn’t look like SEGA had anything to do with it, and was in fact the work of pranksters. much like last weeks bogus Fallout 4 trademark filling and last years one for Half Life 3.
Talking to CVG‘s Rob Crossley a spokesperson for the OHIM confirmed that although they could not specifically comment on particular cases, it was indeed possible for anyone to apply for a trademark and as such the system is open to fakes appearing on their website untill the team can verify their legitimacy.
What is telling in this case, as with the previous hoaxes is that none of them were filled with any other patent office.
We’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear anything else. but I’m sorry to say ladies and gents but this is more than likely a prank.
