Nintendo have very quietly announced, via the Wii support pages of their various regional web portals, that online support for games on the Wii and DS will cease on 20th May.
That means from 20th May you’ll no longer be able to play the likes of Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros Brawl, Pokemon Soul Silver and many others online after that date.
A full list of all the games effected is available here.
However the following services will still continue function, so it’s not all bad news, especially if your Wii is now predominantly a media hub.
- Internet Channel
- Amazon Instant Video
- Netflix
- Nintendo DS Browser
- Nintendo DSi Browser
- Nintendo DSi Shop
- Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play
- Wii Shop Channel
- YouTube
Personally, I think it’s a bad move since there’s still active online communities for some of Nintendo’s bigger properties like Mario Kart Wii and especially the older Pokemon games. But them’s the brakes.
