Last November, Marvel released a teaser with a binary code that translated to Age of Ultron. A few days later Marvel and Disney confirmed that the sequel to the Avengers would use this comic arc for the 2015 sequel.
Today, Disney and Marvel announced that James Spader would take on the role of Ultron. Whether he will merely voice the evil robot or wear an armored suit in a re-molding of the character is unclear. Fans will remember James Spader as Robert California during the last season of the US version of The Office, as well as from his wonderful characters on The Practice, which both launched and morphed into Boston Legal.

Joss Whedon also confirmed that Ultron is not using his common comic book and animated persona. Although the character is a dark twist to the Prodigal Son parable, always returning home to kill his makers or “fathers,” Ultron never received positive reactions for his animated appearances. Thus, Joss Whedon is giving Ultron time-travel abilities.

However, the comic arc for Age of Ultron took place on different versions of Earth. On Earth-616, Ultron has destroyed humanity and taken over the planet. Whether Whedon will open the door to multiple Earths, which is commonly a DC comics styling, is also unclear. Regardless, this time traveling ability does shed further light on why Quicksilver (Aaron Tyler-Johnson of Kick Ass fame) will appear in The Avengers sequel.
Quicksilver is a speedster who can run and move fast enough to open time warps. Thus, if the Avengers are going to go back in time or to alternate realities, then Quicksilver is the key.
