Injustice Updates vs. Marvel Television

Joss Whedon’s new television series Agents of SHIELD made its prime time début yesterday. The Marvel/Disney production began, literally, with a bang by unveiling Ming-Na Weng as a reimagined version of The Cavalry, normal civilians altered into super heroes by the Extremis project, and hover cars. Marvel has clearly claimed the cinematic spotlight by using Disney’s bottomless pockets to flood the market. Whedon’s return is also a cherry on top of last week’s creamy announcement that Pixar will release an animated Marvel film based on the Manga inspired Big Hero 6.

However, DC still has a little fight left in them. Injustice: Gods Among Us logged in through the back door of Facebook last night while we were watching Agent Coulson’s spies and released a much needed update to the iOS version of the popular DC fighting game. The new update allows players to earn what has been deemed “Alliance” credits. More specifically, if players invite their Facebook friends to play, and friends accept the invitation, then unique character cards become available. Each friend that joins an alliance rewards the instigator with 5 Alliance credits.

The two cards in front of Kilowog (And, no, that is NOT Justin Bieber as Robin!!!) are support cards, which signals that the characters currently unavailable in the iOS version, such as Raven, may soon be added to decks. Although the other cards that can be purchased with Alliance credits are unknown, Laser Lemming still sent out over 200 invitations today to see if we could get an early peek. However, this week’s round of one-upmanship will clearly fall to Marvel’s favor and its successful bridging of the Avengers franchise to public television. It has been far too long for Joss Whedon to be off TV’s airwaves. Most importantly, his return sparks hope of a Firefly return, and that clearly tips the scales in the direction of Marvel/Disney. Sorry, Injustice/Facebook.
